Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Heal Your Skin with Powerful Light Technology in New York

For more than two decades, intense pulsed light has helped women and men suffering from a range of conditions including acne, rosacea, unwanted pigment and hair, and more. By delivering targeted wavelengths of light that damage unwanted cells and tissue and stimulate collagen production, IPL at NY’s Hudson Dermatology can improve both the color and texture of skin.

The Spectrum IPL system is equipped with four filters for a customized experience that is effective across a wide range of skin types and tones.

The Hudson Dermatology team recognizes that each patient is unique, with different concerns and goals. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Instead, our board-certified dermatologists, physician assistants, and aestheticians work with and listen to each patient to create a comfortable experience and effective results. If an IPL treatment at Hudson Dermatology can help you achieve the health and confidence you deserve, the New York-based team is ready to begin that journey with you.

How Does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Work?

At the beginning of each session, you will first have a gel applied to the skin in the target area and will be given a pair of dark glasses to protect your eyes. During an IPL treatment, a medical provider runs a handheld device over a specific area. This device emits light energy that targets unwanted pigmented cells and blood vessels in the skin, leading to their breakdown. With time, the body naturally gets rid of this damaged tissue.

Unlike a laser, the Spectrum IPL system sends out multiple wavelengths of light, enabling it to treat multiple conditions during a single session. Depending on the size of the area being treated, a single session might take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Some patients describe the sensation of an intense pulsed light session as similar to the snap of a rubber band. While it’s generally well-tolerated, patients with sensitive skin should discuss the possibility of administering a numbering cream prior to their treatment during their consultation.

The Hudson Dermatology team provides patients with pre- and aftercare instructions. Before an intense pulsed light session, patients should avoid tanning, waxing, wearing makeup or perfume or any other skin irritant, as well as certain medications that may cause bleeding. After an IPL treatment, patients may notice some redness or swelling, but this is typically mild and resolves within a day. Aftercare instructions include avoiding direct sun exposure, strenuous exercise, and hot baths or showers.

Visible improvements following IPL treatment at Hudson Dermatology may start to appear after a week, but can take several months to fully materialize. For optimal results, some patients may require multiple sessions spaced about one month apart.

What Conditions Does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treat?

The rejuvenating powers of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment can be used to clear or minimize the symptoms of a wide range of conditions across most of the body. Focus on acne, age spots, birthmarks, spider veins and broken blood vessels, dark spots, fine lines, freckles, pigmented lesions, the redness of rosacea, scars, and stretch marks. It can also remove unwanted hair and tattoos.

What Else Can Light Be Used to Treat?

Other powerful light energy treatments include Thera Clear for clearing acne, as well as photodynamic therapy to address a range of cosmetic and medical conditions. Single-wavelength devices include laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation, and laser nail fungus treatment.
