Discover what the most administered treatment in the world can do for you.

What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is an injectable neuromodulator, which is the technical term for a medication that impacts the way messages are sent through the nervous system. Made by Allergan, the formula is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, derived from the common Clostridium botulinum bacterium.

Decades of research, testing, and use around the globe have gone into ensuring that the formula is both safe and effective. At Hudson Dermatology, we use the injectable for cosmetic procedures only. However, the injectable can also be used for medical applications, such as reducing migraines, chronically crossed eyes, uncontrollable muscle spasms, and more. When used to reduce facial wrinkles, the botulinum toxin type A is called BOTOX® Cosmetic.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

BOTOX® works by preventing chemical messages from triggering action in specific muscles—even when the brain sends signals for those muscles to contract.

All facial expressions, as well as activities like blinking and squinting, are controlled by muscles. Certain expressions and activities pull the skin into folds again and again. Youthful skin appears smooth and unlined, even when being pulled around, and it returns to its resting state easily.

However, decades of muscle activity combined with age-related changes in the skin gradually cause lines known as “dynamic wrinkles” to develop.

Thinner and less-elastic skin will begin to reveal pronounced dynamic wrinkles over time, from forehead creases to fine webs of lines near the eyes. Repetitive expressions and actions will further etch these lines into the skin, creating grooves that are visible even when the face is at rest.

Relaxing specific muscle activity makes the related dynamic wrinkles less visible. This effect is temporary, wearing off in a matter of months.

What Can BOTOX® Treat?

There are three types of dynamic wrinkles the U.S. Food and Drug Association (FDA) has approved for treatment with BOTOX®, all found on the upper third of the face:

Forehead lines are often long, horizontal creases that develop between the eyebrows and the hairline.

Frown lines may be referred to as “11’s” because they form as two vertical lines between the eyebrows.

Crow’s feet are fine lines that branch from the outer corners of the eyes, visible especially when you smile or squint.

Experienced injectors, like those at Hudson Dermatology, can also safely use BOTOX® to treat other cosmetic issues—some age-related, some not.

Bunny lines appear to either side of the nose, often as a result of frequent nose-wrinkling (similar to how a rabbit repeatedly scrunches up its nose).

Gummy smile is the term for excessive gum visibility when you lift your lips in a happy expression.

Targeting the muscles responsible for any of these cosmetic problems—as well as other issues, such as a drooping or “heavy” brow—can take only minutes, while providing months of natural- looking results.

Why Choose Hudson Dermatology for BOTOX® in NY?

Simply typing “BOTOX® near me” into a search bar can reveal dozens, or even hundreds of options. For the best BOTOX® results, patients should do more than choose the closest provider—especially since there are so many factors to consider, including safety, comfort, and both short- and long-term results.

Any injectors should be experienced with the specific product, have a long history of using injectables in general, operate a clean and welcoming office, be willing to answer questions from interested patients (“What does BOTOX® cost?” “Which is better: BOTOX® vs Dysport®?”), and more.

Each injector on the Hudson Dermatology team is well-versed in administering BOTOX® and can go over the treatment in detail. We use the official product to ensure proper dosage, and do not substitute one option for another.

Our approach involves making injections in carefully selected muscles in order to create a natural-looking rejuvenation. We take all necessary safety precautions and work with each patient individually to make the process as comfortable as possible.

What Results Can Be Expected from BOTOX® Injections?

Muscle activity in the treatment area will reduce until the targeted muscles stay at rest, even when specific expressions are made. This effect is gradual, developing over three to 10 days after the injections.

Over the following months, patients will notice that their forehead—or other treatment area— remains smoother instead of bunching into furrows or wrinkles. Over time, as the body processes the active ingredients in the medication, activity will begin to return to the muscles. Patients can expect the effect to last for anywhere from four to six months.

As the unwanted creases and lines return, patients can schedule a new injection session to get another round of smooth-skinned results.

Can BOTOX® Help to Prevent Wrinkles?

Some younger patients choose to get treatments before their facial lines become pronounced. The thinking behind this “preventative” approach is that it keeps the muscles at rest prior to wrinkles forming on the forehead and elsewhere. Basically, you are “training” your muscles to relax, with the idea that they will maintain reduced activity levels in the long run, resulting in a more youthful look.

Are There BOTOX® Side Effects to Watch For?

There are few cosmetic treatments as thoroughly researched and routinely administered as BOTOX®. Side effects are well known as a result. The most common developments to watch for are slight bruising, redness, and swelling at the injection site. These are all normal reactions to the treatment, and they can be expected to resolve on their own.

Your Hudson Dermatology injector will discuss other potential side effects to watch for—as well as answer your questions about BOTOX®, at your consultation.

Every physician at each of Hudson Dermatology’s seven locations is board certified and committed to providing quality skincare built on a foundation of advanced technology and techniques. All treatments—medical and cosmetic—are highly personalized and chosen for their safety and results.

What Does BOTOX® Cost in NY?

No two people will have the same exact treatment. Specific details—such as BOTOX® price— are best covered during a personalized consultation. Cost will ultimately depend on the treatment area, the number of treatments, how many vials are being used, and other details.

How Do BOTOX® and Fillers Work Together?

BOTOX® is ideal for smoothing dynamic wrinkles, but other cosmetic treatments are more appropriate for different facial lines. Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®, as well as collagen-stimulating injectables like Radiesse®, can be used to restore volume to areas where creases known as static wrinkles have developed. Any of these injectables can be used on their own, but they can often be combined so that their collective effect is one of total rejuvenation for the face.
